The numbers published today turned out to be rather mixed and prevented the yen from getting stronger. Apart from this, markets are not very volatile due to the Independence Day celebrations in the USA that took place yesterday.
In the morning, Japan reported on the Household Spending, which added 4.0% y/y in May after expanding by 1.3% y/y in April. Investors anticipated the indicator to rise a little bit, but actual numbers surpassed their expectations. Taking into account that this release is usually consider as a leading indicator, June reports on the Inflation Rate and Consumer Spending may be really positive.
The Leading Indicators went from being 95.9 points in April to 95.2 points in May. The report offers an average dynamics of major macroeconomic indicators to assess the economic outlook for the next 3-65 months. As we can see, market expectations are rather careful.
As a rule, the Yen barely responds to domestic statistics, because most of investors use it as a “safe haven” assets.
